10 Essential Literacy Practices (P-6). The 10 Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy is facilitated by Christine Topfer. Christine Topfer is an education consultant working with the ACT Education Directorate. The 10 Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy have been identified from research conducted by Prof Nell Duke et al (General Education Leadership Network, Michigan). Whilst these are not the only literacy practices you will use in your classroom, this research indicates that these practices are essential to improving literacy outcomes. These practices should occur throughout the day, including being integrated into all learning areas.
