10 Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy (5449)

Description

PLEASE NOTE: This session will be run through a Google Classroom. An email will be sent with an invitation to the Google Classroom. Christine Topfer presents the research-based 10 Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy and provides participants with practical ideas and research to support the implementation in the classroom. The 10 Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy are: 1. Deliberate efforts to foster literacy motivation and engagement within and across lessons 2. Read alouds of age-appropriate books and other materials, print or digital/Intentional, research-informed instruction using increasingly complex texts 3. Small group instruction, using a variety of grouping strategies, most often with flexible groups 4. Activities that build phonological awareness/Activities that build reading fluency and stamina with increasingly complex texts 5. Explicit instruction in letter-sound relationships/Discussion of the ideas in texts and how to construct text meaning across texts and disciplines 6. Research-informed and standards-aligned writing instruction 7. Intentional and ambitious efforts to build vocabulary and content knowledge 8. Abundant reading material and reading opportunities in the classroom 9. Ongoing observation and assessment of students’ language and literacy development that informs their education 10. Collaboration with families in promoting literacy

Christine has worked as a school leader, literacy coach and early years teacher. She has published journal articles, contributed to publications, co-authored two books ‘Supporting Literacy Learning in the Early Years’, and ‘Guiding Thinking for Effective Spelling’. Christine has been working in ACT public schools over the past 3 years in the Early Years Literacy Project and leading workshops on Supporting Striving Adolescent Readers and Writers.
