Understanding Dyslexia and Significant Reading Difficulties (DSRD) - TQI Accredited (5453)

Description

Understanding Dyslexia and Significant Reading Difficulties (DSRD) online training course offers participants an opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of dyslexia and significant reading difficulties and its impact on learning. This course consists of three (3) compulsory online chat session spread to complement each section of the online course. Chat sessions are supported by an online tutor and consist of online learning activities and/or additional reading material in support of group discussions. Please be aware that this course can take up to 16 -20 hours to complete, including three (3) X one and half (1.5) hour tutor live chat sessions (spread over a period of six (6) to eight (8) weeks. This course is TQI accredited for eleven hours in 2020.

Outcomes

 

Participants will:

       Explore the main characteristics of dyslexia in the context of significant difficulties in reading;

       Develop an understanding of the stages of learning and impacts on the development of phonemic awareness, phonics, accuracy/ fluency with text, vocabulary/comprehension and its possible impacts to learning progression;

       Explore the role of working memory in relation to dyslexia;

       Explore some of the issues surrounding dyslexia and significant difficulties in reading;

       Understand and explore the importance of a whole school approach in supporting students with significant reading difficulties;

       Develop confidence in identifying and responding to the individual learning needs of students with dyslexia and significant reading difficulties through;

       Creating student learning profiles;

       Creating and working with SMART goals and;

       Implementing a range of appropriate adjustments/ interventions.

Program Design

 

Session dates: Online access begins week five (5), Term 3 and continues through to week 1, Term 4.

Compulsory live chat sessions :

Wednesday August 26, 3:30 to 5.00pm

Wednesday September 9, 3:30 to 5.00pm

Wednesday September 23, 3:30 to 5.00pm.

Program Expectations

 

Participants attend the ‘Live Chat’ sessions and complete online readings, quizzes (3), evaluation questionnaires (2) and contribute to the online forum discussions (10), including one (1) case study online reflection. Participants will also form a learning ‘Student Profile’ to inform and develop three SMART goals and related interventions that will support student progress. Participants must also respond to others within their cohort (min 5).
